The short trip was just on time as icy temperatures were announced for the weekend in Germany. Who would mind exchanging minus 25° for plus 25°C?!
On Friday morning we set off from Munich via Gran Canaria with Tuifly to Sal. After a 4 hour flight we landed in Las Palmas for a 45 minute break and then after another 2.5 hour flight we landed on Sal. Thanks to the late night check in we got front seats and so we were the first in the passport control queue, which normally needs some patience! We recommend not to queue on the far left at the passport control, because they sell visas there. In general your visa is already paid on arrival. Once we collected our luggage, the driver of our incoming agency Vista Verde welcomed us and after 15 minutes we arrived at Hotel Morabeza.
It was a pleasant 23°C with good wind - so we went straight to the Club Mistral center at Santa Maria beach, where our center manager Younnes and his super friendly team welcomed us. The team members are Katrin, Calu, Hamid, Faycel, Maruja, Ted, Edy and Evo. The wind was blowing constantly with 4-5 bft. so we of course went on the water! There is usually a small shore break but on some days in the season it can be pretty high and on these days Ted and Edy, two of the Club Mistral service team help every guest into the water and over the break with their equipment. The light cross-offshore wind, which turns side-shore with stronger winds, allows easy in and out riding – the perfect start to a windsurfing holiday!
Kitesurfers launch further downwind in the kitezone so there is enough space for all water sports and everyone can feel safe. Evo is responsible for the safety and takes care of the Club Mistral guests. A rescue boat is ready on the beach in case someone needs help.
On Sal the tuition is excellent as we have a very professional team on site. Calu and Faycel are teaching all windsurfing levels, Hamid, Maruja, Feycel and Younnes are extremely experienced kite instructors – and of course all with IKO or VDWS licenses.
Santa Maria we have a second Club Mistral center in Leme Bedje, situated at the former Hotel SAB SAB. Sometimes there is 1 bft. more wind than on Santa Maria and the shore break is not as strong. Currently, there are unfortunately a couple of stones near the shore, so we recommend surf shoes. Gregor and Ratta are very helpful and if you wish they will even surf the equipment out for you. From here you are relatively fast into the waves at Punta Leme, which offers perfect conditions for windsurf wave beginners. The breaking wave will push you without danger into a flat area from which you can easily sail back to the peak avoiding white water.
Lessons for kitesurf beginners are held downwind from the main center in Santa Maria or directly at the kite beach. We have a daily shuttle service to the kite beach which only takes about 10 minutes. We now offer for all kitesurfers (with rental or storage) a special weekly package incl. kite beach shuttle.
Should there be a time with less wind there are plenty of alternatives. Besides windsurfing and kitesurfing you can surf or stand up paddle at our Club Mistral centers at any time. If you have never tried it before you really should take the opportunity and have some lessons with one of our professional instructors. The opportunities at Club Mistral on Sal are endless!
Our last trip to Cape Verde was a few years ago, so we were surprised at all the new buildings while driving from the airport to Santa Maria. A few years ago many new buildings were built and because of the crisis only partly finished. However, if you walk along the beach and through Santa Maria you will quickly notice the original Sal again. The locals are very open and friendly and every night you can hear music coming out from the bars and the houses.
Meanwhile, there is also a varied selection of accommodation – depending on the level of luxury required and budget – and we can give you the best tips. Personally we have visited and tested almost all accommodation. We liked Hotel Morabeza most but it’s a little more expensive. For those who do not put so much emphasis on accommodation and like to save money we recommend Pensionen Dunas del Sal (near Club Mistral Santa Maria center) or Hotel Santa Maria Beach (near Club Mistral Leme Bedje).
The Appartments Porto Antigo are perfect for self-catering and families. Those who like to be at the center of the action and are not sensitive to noise will be in good hands in Nha Terra or Les Alizes, both directly in the city. We can also book the Hotel Belorizonte for you which is located directly behind the Club Mistral center in Santa Maria. It’s an affordable mid-class hotel with breakfast, half pension or all inclusive. Generally, we recommend booking accommodation with breakfast only, because there are so many nice restaurants nearby.
The best restaurant on the island is still the Atlantic Bar, directly beside our center in Santa Maria. Patrick and his wife are looking forward to welcoming you. Beside snacks for lunch they offer a wide variety of meat and fish dishes for dinner. You will even find a good cappuccino there!
So what are you waiting for? We would like to help you with the organization of your holiday to the wind paradise on the Cape Verde islands!
Important: Currently only VISA cards are accepted in Cape Verde! Our young and dynamic team is looking forward to welcoming you!
