Dakhla vs Safaga: Which destination should you choose based on your rider profile?
When you plan a watersports trip, you’re not just choosing a destination. You’re choosing a daily rhythm, the intensity of your sessions, and the atmosphere after the ride.
Between Dakhla, in southern Morocco, and Safaga, on the Red Sea in Egypt, the dilemma is common. Both spots work year-round, both are reliable, and both are benchmark destinations for kitesurfing, wingfoiling, and, on the Safaga side, windsurfing.
But once you’re on the water, the feeling is not the same. And depending on your level, your goals, and even your personality, one destination may suit you far better than the other.
WIND: POWER OR COMFORT?
If you ask a rider who knows Dakhla what defines the spot, the answer is simple: wind and the lagoon. In Dakhla, the wind blows side-shore, steady, and often strong (around 25 knots). You come here with a high chance of riding almost every day. This consistency creates the ideal environment to learn or progress quickly. You can plan a lesson, practice your moves, and stack sessions without depending on unpredictable weather.
In practical terms, this means:
- smaller kites for kitesurfing or wingfoiling
- quick take-off in wingfoil
- safe and confidence-building sessions
In Safaga, the wind is also present year-round, but it is generally more moderate. Its side-off orientation helps smooth the water surface. It’s less about raw power and more about comfortable consistency. If you are looking for smooth, easy, and enjoyable riding conditions, Safaga is the right destination for you.
WATER CONDITIONS: EVOLVING LAGOON OR PERMANENT FLAT WATER?
This is where the difference becomes very concrete.
DAKHLA: A LAGOON THAT CHANGES WITH THE TIDE
The lagoon of Dakhla is vast, open, and constantly changing. Depending on the tide, you will find very flat zones or more chop, from mirror-flat water to bumpier sections. This variety forces you to adapt, read the water, and adjust your lines.
For wingfoil and kitesurfing, you have a huge playground with plenty of space to ride without pressure. Our two spots, Oasis212 and White Dune Canyon, allow you to ride away from the crowds.
Another major advantage: there is also a wave spot accessible depending on the conditions. If you want to mix things up and add a surf dimension to your trip, Dakhla Lassarga offers exactly that.
ION CLUB operates two strategically located centers there:
This setup helps optimize logistics and maximize your time on the water.
SAFAGA: AN ULTRA-PREDICTABLE TRAINING PLAYGROUND
In Safaga, the Red Sea offers water conditions that are mostly flat and exceptionally clear. The turquoise color is not just aesthetic: it makes the seabed easier to read and increases the overall feeling of safety.
The side-off wind keeps the surface clean and consistent. You get fewer tide-related changes and much more stable riding conditions.
This kind of environment is especially effective for:
- learning wingfoil
- practicing jibes in windsurfing
- improving freestyle in kitesurfing
- repeating transitions without dealing with chop
On the other hand, there is no real structured wave spot in Safaga. If your goal is clearly surf-oriented riding, Dakhla remains the more versatile option.
TEMPERATURE: A DETAIL THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
In Safaga, both the air and the water are generally warmer. The Red Sea keeps pleasant temperatures throughout the year. For riders who are sensitive to the cold or who want long sessions without wearing a thick wetsuit, this is a clear advantage.
In Dakhla, the climate stays mild year-round, but it is slightly cooler, especially outside the summer season. You can still ride in very good conditions, but usually with a 4/3 or 3/2 wetsuit.
If thermal comfort is a priority for you, Safaga can make all the difference.
WHICH SPOT FOR WHICH DISCIPLINE?
Dakhla has historically been strongly focused on kitesurfing and wingfoiling. The overall vibe of the spot, the power of the wind, and the lagoon setup naturally attract kiters. It is a perfect destination for learning. Wingfoil also enjoys excellent conditions there thanks to the large riding area and reliable wind, especially at our Oasis212 spot.
Safaga, on the other hand, is more balanced across disciplines. Windsurfing feels especially at home there thanks to the flat water and steady wind. Wingfoil progresses quickly in this clean and stable environment. Kitesurfing is also very comfortable.
If you are traveling with a group of mixed profiles (a windsurfer, a wingfoiler, and a kiter), Safaga offers greater versatility, especially for windsurfers.
ENVIRONMENT AND OFF-THE-WATER EXPERIENCE
The setting around a spot has a huge impact on the overall trip experience.
In Dakhla, you are surrounded by a wild and remote environment. The desert stretches around the lagoon. There are activities available : quad excursions, visits to the Imlili Springs, a stop at the local souk, but they remain secondary. Here, people mainly come to ride, eat well, disconnect, meet people… and do it all again the next day. The whole atmosphere is built around watersports and simplicity.
In Safaga, the vibe is different: more comfortable and more structured. The center is directly accessible from Shams Safaga Resort. The experience feels smooth, with no complicated logistics. Extra activities are possible, and boat cruises can be organized to complement your stay. The environment is still focused on riding, but with a more resort-style dimension.
In both destinations, the centers are located directly within the hotels.
SO, WHAT KIND OF RIDER ARE YOU?
To make your decision easier, ask yourself these questions:
- Are you looking for strong side-shore wind, lagoons, safe conditions, and a true watersports atmosphere?
- Do you want to add wave sessions to your trip?
- Do you enjoy wild spots and total immersion?
In that case, Dakhla is probably the best choice.
On the other hand:
- Do you prefer flat, easy-to-read water conditions?
- Do you want to ride in warm, turquoise water all year round?
- Are you traveling with different rider profiles (wing, windsurf, kite) and looking for a relaxed atmosphere?
Then Safaga becomes a logical choice.
