If you practice kitesurfing, wingfoiling, or windsurfing, two destinations naturally stand out in the ION CLUB calendar: Sal in Cape Verde and Tarifa in Andalusia.

Rather than comparing them, there is one essential thing to understand: they work like a seasonal relay.

When one destination enters its best wind period, the other starts to calm down and vice versa.

A Rare Variety of Spots on a Small Island

Around Santa Maria, several options are available depending on your discipline and level.

Santa Maria offers a relatively flat water surface with offshore wind. This is where most wingfoil and windsurf lessonstake place. The environment is structured and ideal for learning and progressing with confidence.

Just a few minutes away, Kite Beach brings a different atmosphere. The water becomes more choppy and dynamic. It is the main spot for kitesurf lessons and rentals, with a side-shore wind and a more energetic feel.

For riders looking for smoother, more technical riding, Ponta Leme offers a flatter water surface, appreciated for windsurf and wingfoil when the wind sets in cleanly.

Then there is Ponta Preta, the island’s iconic wave spot. When the swell arrives, it reveals world-class wave potential. It’s not a beginner’s playground, but for experienced riders, it’s an unforgettable session. There are also other wave spots such as Secret Spot and Ali Baba.

All together, Sal allows you to adapt your sessions day after day. You don’t have to deal with the conditions, you simply choose the spot that fits them best.

APRIL TO SEPTEMBER: TARIFA TAKES OVER

When the African winter slows down, Europe starts to warm up. From April onward, Tarifa enters its best wind season. Temperatures become pleasant, the atmosphere softens, and reliable wind systems settle in.

In summer, the thermal Poniente becomes more frequent. This west wind, created by temperature differences, is usually more stable and comfortable.

The Levante is still present, but during the summer months the conditions are often more accessible than in winter. The water is generally calmer as well, making the sessions smoother and more enjoyable.

A Versatile Spot, Without Extremes

In Tarifa, most sessions take place at Valdevaqueros.

The water surface shifts between flat and choppy depending on the wind direction, but overall it is more regular and less rough than during the colder months.

You won’t find a structured wave spot like Ponta Preta, nor an ultra-flat lagoon. Instead, you get a versatile playground, perfect for:

• riding in freeride,

• working on wingfoil transitions,

• progressing in freestyle in kitesurf or windsurf,

• enjoying long sessions with steady wind.

The advantage of Tarifa is its simplicity. You have one main spot, easy logistics, and all disciplines sharing the same area.

If your travel window falls between April and September, Tarifa becomes the logical choice in Europe.

On Land: Andalusia or Cape Verde?

The season doesn’t only determine the weather. It also shapes the experience outside the water.

In Tarifa, local life is built around the watersports community. After your session, you can easily head into the town center: tapas bars, lively terraces, music, and dancing. The energy is contagious, and you can really feel the kite, wing, and windsurf culture throughout the town.

In Sal, the atmosphere feels more local and authentic. In Santa Maria, bars come alive at sunset, Cape Verdean music fills the air, and cachupa often finds its way onto the table. The vibe is warm, simple, and closely connected to the ocean.

In both places, you don’t just come to ride. You come to experience a destination.

WHAT STRATEGY SHOULD YOU FOLLOW TO NEVER MISS THE WIND?

If your goal is simple, to ride as often as possible throughout the year, the answer is not Sal or Tarifa.

The answer is: Sal in winter, Tarifa in summer.

From November to March, count on the consistent strength of the Cape Verde trade winds and the color of the water.

From April to September, enjoy the thermal winds and reliable spot in Andalusia.

Few destinations complement each other this well. By alternating between Sal and Tarifa, you can almost build a year-round wind calendar for your riding.
