The best kitesurfing spots in Mauritius

Mauritius, located in the Indian Ocean to the east of Madagascar, is a real treasure trove for kitesurfers. This tropical, volcanic island is not only popular with tourists in search of paradise beaches, hikers and divers, but also with kitesurfers from all over the world in search of thrills.

Over several kilometers of coastline, from Le Morne to La Pointe via Anse la Raie or Bel Ombre, you will discover all kinds of riding conditions and unimaginable kitesurfing spots, making Mauritius an exceptional destination. Lagoons and waves will make your holiday even more enchanting!

When to kitesurf in Mauritius?

The best time to kitesurf in Mauritius is undoubtedly from June to October. Unlike Europe, this is the winter season in Mauritius, and the trade winds blow steadily along the coast, averaging 15 to 25 knots. Admittedly, water and air temperatures are a little cooler (around 24° and 23° respectively) than during the summer (which is hotter and more humid), but if you want to be sure of riding every day or so, this is the best advice we can give you for planning a kitesurfing holiday here!

There are no real rules as the days go by, as the wind can sometimes blow stronger in the morning than in the afternoon and vice-versa, so the key is to be on the spot.

What level of kitesurfing is required in Mauritius?

On the south-west coast of Mauritius, the Le Morne spot is well known for fantastic kitesurfing conditions. For beginners or those who simply want to ride without getting scared, the lagoon with its flat, transparent water is a must. As for reef wave enthusiasts, there are a number of different spots available, so it is up to you to choose the right one for your level of wave riding. Amongst the waves you can kitesurf there is Little Reef, which is small and only 300 m from the beach, or Manawa, which is more impressive but with a much greater depth, or One Eye for the very experienced kitesurfer (beware of the strong current and very shallow depth)… great waves are guaranteed!

All levels of kitesurfing are possible in Mauritius, from novice to expert, with private or semi-private lessons available for all levels, as well as supervised rental of kitesurfing equipment. Just a stone’s throw from the prestigious JW Marriott Mauritius Resort (partner ION CLUB Holidays), the ION CLUB Le Morne center and its team of professionals are in place and will look after you. For those who want a more intimate moment once the session is over, stay at Villa Seewoo or RIU Turquoise Hotel, our other partners.

Completely north of Mauritius, Anse la Raie, not far from Cap Malheureux, is also a fabulous spot on the island. The spot is divided into 3 parts: In front of our center ION CLUB Anse la Raie the launch is smooth in a very shallow lagoon. Riding from one side to the other is very quick, but it is ideal for an introduction to kitesurfing or for learning to jump (with respect for other kitesurfers). Then, rounding a tiny island on two sides, there is a gigantic lagoon with deeper water, where kite loops, speed and foil fanatics and all levels of kitesurfer can practice their favorite sport. It is a paradise for downwinders. Finally, much further out to sea, wave-lovers can play on the reef (waves generally between 1 and 2 meters high maximum), but always remember to warn the club or one of your friends before you go riding.

Of course, there are other good kitesurfing spots in Mauritius, particularly on the east coast, such as Palmar, La Pointe and Belle Mare. Ride here on crystal-clear waters, but where booties are highly recommended … watch out for coral!

Which kite to choose for kitesurfing in Mauritius?

The question of which kite to use for a trip to Mauritius is crucial. If you decide to take your own equipment, be sure to check the forecast 24 to 48 hours before departure. Note that during the winter (May to October), the wind oscillates most of the time between 15 and 25 knots, so it is a good idea during this time of year to bring kites between 8 and 12m², depending on your level and weight, which will be ideal to cope with all weather conditions and be able to ride on all spots. As for the summer (November to April), the choice is wider, and we recommend kites between 8 and 17m² in order to be more or less certain of being able to get out there.
