Kitesurf Rental or Lessons: What Level Do You Need to Ride on Your Own?

Before going any further, one important point: at ION CLUB, we don’t rent equipment to riders who aren’t able to kite independently. This isn’t just a recommendation, it’s a safety rule we always follow. If you have a recognized certification (an IKO or VDWS card confirming your level), we will ask you to show it. Otherwise, an instructor will check  your level on the water before you can rent any equipment.

Kitesurf Rental or Lessons: What Level Do You Need to Ride on Your Own?

It’s a very common question. Renting equipment is often cheaper than taking a lesson and gives you much more freedom. But switching to rental too soon is one of the most common mistakes when learning to kitesurf, and can actually slow down your progress.

The real question isn’t which option costs less, but when you’re truly ready to kite independently. This guide gives you clear criteria to help you know when you’re ready, explains why renting too early can work against you, and shows how lessons and rental can complement each other.

WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO BE INDEPENDENT IN KITESURFING?

Being independent doesn’t just mean standing on the board for a few seconds. It means being able to kite on your own, safely, without putting yourself or other people at risk. To do that, you need to have three key skills.

Riding upwind

This is the most important one. If you can’t ride upwind, you drift downwind every time and end up far from where you started. A rider who can’t go upwind is not fully independent, because they still need someone to help or pick them up.

Changing direction

You need to be able to turn and go back the other way with control, on both sides. This lets you keep riding back and forth without stopping all the time or falling into the water. It makes your sessions much smoother and more comfortable.

Knowing how to self-rescue

Self-rescue is the technique that helps you deal with a problem on the water and get back to shore on your own, for example if the wind drops or you have an equipment issue. Without this skill, even a small problem can quickly become risky.

These three skills go together. Being confident in just one or two isn’t enough. You need all three to be truly independent and ready to rent equipment.

WHY RENTING TOO EARLY ISN’T A GOOD IDEA

Renting may seem cheaper at first, but if you’re not yet independent, it’s often not allowed. Without an instructor, you can make mistakes without anyone there to correct them, take unnecessary risks, and develop bad habits that are harder to fix later.

There’s also a real safety risk. If you’re on your own, your equipment isn’t set up properly, and you don’t know how to recover in an emergency, a small problem can quickly become serious. That’s why most centres ask you to prove that you can kite independently before renting equipment. A few extra hours of lessons at the right time can save you much more time than struggling through full days of rental.

HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU NEED BEFORE YOU CAN KITE ON YOUR OWN?

Your progress is better measured in hours of practice, not in days or sessions. A motivated rider taking private or semi-private lessons can often become independent after around 12 hours of lessons. This can vary depending on the wind, how comfortable you are in the water, and how regularly you practice, but it’s a useful guideline.

The best way to progress quickly is to get plenty of practice on a windy spot, avoid long breaks between sessions, and have an instructor who can correct you as you go. That’s exactly what a kitesurf course at a reliable spot gives you: enough time on the water to improve without losing what you’ve learned between sessions.

LESSONS OR RENTAL: DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO CHOOSE?

No. Lessons and rental are not two separate choices. They simply come at different stages. Lessons help you become independent. Once you’re ready, rental gives you the freedom to kite without having to travel with of your own equipment.

This also makes sense when you travel. Even if you’re already an independent rider, it can be a good idea to book a first session or some local guidance when you arrive at a new spot. It helps you understand the area, currents, and local conditions before renting equipment and heading out on your own. It’s not a step backwards. It’s simply a safe and sensible way to discover a new spot.

FAQ

WHAT LEVEL DO YOU NEED TO RENT KITESURF EQUIPMENT?

You need to be fully independent: able to ride upwind, change direction both ways, and perform a self-rescue. Most centres will ask you to show that you have this level before renting equipment, for safety reasons.

HOW MANY HOURS OF LESSONS DO YOU NEED TO BECOME INDEPENDENT?

Around 12 hours of private or semi-private lessons for a motivated rider. This can vary depending on the wind, your fitness, and how regularly you practise. Taking lessons regularly without long breaks will help you progress faster.

IS RENTING CHEAPER THAN TAKING LESSONS?

Yes. But renting before you’re independent is not allowed and often ends up wasting time and money. You make less progress, spend more time walking than kiting, and take unnecessary risks. Taking lessons until you’re ready is a much better investment.

SHOULD YOU TAKE A LESSON AT A NEW SPOT IF YOU’RE ALREADY INDEPENDENT?

It’s highly recommended. A guided session at a new spot helps you understand the area, currents, and local conditions before kiting on your own. It’s a smart way to stay safe.
