Windsurfing & Kitesurfing in Golf de Roses Spain

the ION CLUB location at the finest kitesurfing and windsurfing spot Golf de Roses along the Costa Brava

Not far from the border with France lies the fantastic windsurfing and kitesurfing spot Golf de Roses at the Costa Brava in northern Spain. The wind in the north-east of the country is due to thermal conditions one of the most reliable that the Mediterranean coast has to offer and therefore has been popular with a large number of returning windsurfers for quite some time – not only in the summer months.

In addition to the extensive sessions on the water, other sporting activities can be easily integrated into the day at the Golf de Roses due to its proximity to the Prepyrenees. These include trekking, downhill biking or cycling. Along the way, there is a wide range of culinary delights on offer, from wine tastings to tapas and the typical regional sardine bread.

What you should know about the Costa Brava wind conditions and the wind conditions on the spot

Both ION CLUB water sports centres (ex Club Mistral) are located directly in the middle of the Golf de Roses bay, which owes its name to the nearby town of Roses in the far south of the Cap de Creus. Thermal winds usually start around midday and constant side-onshore winds blow into the bay from south-east. The direction of the wind towards the coast makes the spot particularly suitable for beginners and a safe surfing area for intermediates.

The thermal winds blow fairly moderate at around 10 to 20 knots, whereas the famous Tramuntana wind from the north brings rather strong winds. Due to the ideal location in the middle of the bay, the north wind is cleanly rideable in front of the ION CLUB centres – little distracted by the Prepyrenees. Intermediates and experts can enjoy side to side offshore winds.

Your surf infrastructure at ION CLUB Golf de Roses

During the surf season from mid-April to mid-October, the main centre of the ION CLUB Golf de Roses is fully available for you. In addition, during the high season months of July and August, the Procenter will be opened to extend the space on the water. As you would expect from ION CLUB, you can count on a high level of professionalism and a fantastic infrastructure at both centres.

For example, the kitesurfing and windsurfing areas are separated from each other, so that the risk of collisions between the sports is basically eliminated. The water sports centres are connected to the La Ballena Alegre camping and bungalow resort in a logistically practical way and are only about four walking minutes away from each other.

At the main centre, you have the advantage that the beach bar OASIS is very close by. Directly in front of the centre you will find the spacious kite zone for all riding levels. The training area is exclusively reserved for the ION CLUB, which means that you always have enough space for your beginner training or for learning new moves in your advanced training.

The on-site equipment rental is well equipped with the latest DUOTONE kites and boards. Of course, independent kitesurfers who only want to store their equipment at the centre are always welcome and benefit from the good infrastructure on site and the good beach vibes, which are not only spread by the coaches. A generous area for equipment maintenance, for setting up and taking down the kites is also available for all ION CLUB customers.

At the Procenter, a little north of the Maincenter, you are right in the middle of the resort life. The pool and the campsite restaurant are right next door, so you can enjoy your lunch break to the max. Located in front of the centre, the windsurfing area is also called the windsurfing channel and offers a completely autonomous spot, far away from the constantly growing kiteboarding area at the spot.

The centre is equipped with the latest DUOTONE sails and FANATIC boards for rental and training, ensuring absolute fun in every discipline. Even the relatively new sport of windfoiling has long been established and can be tried out under the guidance of experienced instructors.

In addition to a large area for equipment maintenance, there is also a surf shop at both stations that stocks the specific equipment and other lifestyle accessories. There are also changing rooms and lockers for your personal belongings.

How to get to the Costa Brava

For Central and Southern Europeans, the Golf de Roses is easy to reach by land. With your own car or in a campervan, for example, you can include the Costa Brava as the first stop on a road trip through Southern Europe. From neighbouring countries, the windy spot in the middle of Europe can also be reached for short periods of time.

If you want to arrive by plane, we recommend Barcelona-El Prat Airport, which is only about an hour and a half’s drive from the Golf de Roses, or even Girona Airport, which is only about a 45-minute drive away. A rental car can be picked up directly at both airports and is usually offered at excellent rates.

If you decide to travel by TGV via Paris to Barcelona, you can easily take the regional trains to Girona or even to Figueres-Vilafant, the nearest train station to ION CLUB Golf de Roses.

In terms of accommodation at the spot, the most comfortable option is probably to stay at the adjacent La Ballena Alegre camping and bungalow resort. This also offers fully equipped sites for campervans. Of course, you can also opt for the more luxurious option in a nearby boutique hotel or holiday condo in the towns of L’Escala or Roses. Accommodation options are plentiful on the Costa Brava.

What makes the services of the ION CLUB so appealing to surfers?

The entire team at the ION CLUB Golf de Roses is committed to their absolute passion for water sports. This is the basis on which the two centres were created and have been continually modified and optimised over the years to meet the needs of windsurfers and kitesurfers. The excellent coaches want to pass on this passion for the sport to all students, regardless of whether they are beginners or advanced students.

Of course, the safety factor is never left out. Brand new equipment from DUOTONE and FANATIC is well maintained by the school, so that all guests can count on kites, sails and boards in excellent condition from the current season. The team is furthermore international, which is why training and customer contact can be provided in various languages. This makes for a very special feel-good atmosphere!

Why locals choose Golf de Roses as their place to live

Locals choose Golf de Roses as their home because the bay and its natural surroundings are so versatile. The beautiful coastline and wild ocean on the doorstep offer an insane quality of life to any nature lover. Long sandy beaches and turquoise waters stand out against the steep cliffs and pine forests. On the windless mornings, the surrounding area of the Pyrenees can be explored while hiking and enjoying the Mediterranean scenery.

There is no shortage of outdoor activities on the Golf de Roses. You will not find any large hotels and the spacious campsites do not disturb the landscape of the Costa Brava. Every day in the afternoon, when the steady wind kicks in, you can indulge in your favourite water activity and finally end the day with a good meal.

The perfect day on the spot

… definitely starts with an extended stand up paddling trip at sunrise, followed by a well-deserved and nourishing breakfast with your crew. Then, at least once during your holiday on the Costa Brava, head to the weekly market in one of the surrounding villages and enjoy the rich variety of fresh fruit and Spanish tapas. On another morning, you could visit the ruins of Empúries.

After a light lunch snack, you can then head out for your first surf session in the early afternoon. How about a few jumps in the perfect flat water as you kite, before the wind picks up further and you rig up the windsurfing sail? In the summer months, the sun doesn’t set until late in the evening and until then, the windsports playground is yours!

The perfect day on the Costa Brava should end with a cold drink. If you still have a little energy left, you can check out the restaurants in L’Escala and taste the best mojito in town while dancing barefoot to live music at one of the Chiringuito beach bars.
